This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International Workshop on Self-Organizing Systems, IWSOS 2006, held in Passau, Germany in September 2006.

The 16 revised full papers and 6 revised short papers presented together with 2 invited talks and 3 poster papers were carefully selected from more than 70 submissions.
