When the Hart first appeared in 1928 its performance was such an improvement over previous aeroplanes of its classifi­cation that it became the outstanding warplane of its day.Designed by Hawker's gifted chief designer Sydney Camm, the Hart had its origins in Air Ministry Specification 12/26 for a day bomber to replace the DH9A, a 'Great War' veteran, the specified power-plant being the new Rolls-Royce 12-cylinder F.1 engine. Camm lost little time in preliminary design work, and a full-sized mock-up soon appeared at Hawker's Canbury Park Road factory in Kingston. The Hawker tender was submitted in early 1927, by which time Rolls-Royce engineers had developed a radically different F.1 with a greatly improved power-to-weight ratio.
