This book is more than simply a review of the 500 most frequently used characters (words). It's an excellent review of the meanings of the characters (with explanatory phrases or sentences in English, pinyin, tone markings,and simplified characters). In addition, it lists and defines the words compounded from the principal character, such as entry 52: yi3. From this come yibian, yihou, yiji, yilai, yinei, yimian, yiqian, yishang, yiwai, yiwang, yiwei, and yixia, plus definitions and examples. Certainly not a substitute for a text, but a very good supplement. It will help build your vocabulary, grammar usage, and give you a better sense of how these words are derived from the principal character.
