Women's Reflections on the Complexities of Forgiveness
Wanda Malcolm, Nancy DeCourville, Kathryn Belicki
Anyone interested in the scholarly study of forgiveness must familiarize themselves with the data collected here. As the editors point out in the introduction, the selections aren't about women's forgiveness ("versus" men's forgiveness); rather, the anthology collects the works of women who do research in forgiveness, because the contributors find that on the whole, women's research and interpretations provide points of view which complicate standing definitions of forgiveness. An overlapping characteristic of many contributions is the resistance to conventional wisdom, and the context-dependent nature of forgiveness. I love the presence of actual women in the studies, after years of reading about hypothetical women in essays on forgiveness! Instead of spitballing comments about imaginary women who are sexually betrayed or abused, these writers go to the source(s). If you enjoy the study of forgiveness and want to feel as though you know whereof you speak, I highly recommend this book. NOTE this is not a feminist text; although some authors are feminists, the book is by and about women, not feminists, which are not coextensive sets. So you don't need to be a feminist to enjoy. Enjoy!
