The book delves into the arrival of the automobile in town and the springing up of auto dealerships, which were founded by entrepreneurial businessmen who built their struggling car dealerships into sound businesses by the beginning of World War II and survived the war despite having no new cars to sell. In addition, Wheels and Deals tells the story of the oldest Ford dealership in North Carolina, founded in 1915, in North Wilkesboro. The dealership is still in existence under the leadership of the founding family.
