The Ardennes Offensive. Us Iii & Xii Corps Southern Sector
Bruce Quarrie
On 16 December 1944 the German Army launched an attack through the Ardennes region of Belgium, aimed at splitting the Allied armies in two. General George Patton's response to the German breakthrough was, 'Hell, let's have the guts to let the sons of bitches go all the way to Paris. Then we'll really cut 'em up.' At a meeting on 19 December Eisenhower asked Patton how quickly he could counterattack. Confidently he answered; 'On 22 December with three divisions.' On 22 December 4 Armored Division began the drive to Bastogne. This title provides a highly detailed unit by unit breakdown of the Allied forces in the southern sector of the 'bulge'. With Patton's counterattack, the scene was set for a classic showdown: this title guides the reader in full detail through the clashes that followed.
