This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Developments in Language Theory, DLT 2004, held in Auckland, New Zealand in December 2004.

The 30 revised full papers presented together with 5 invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 47 submissions. The main subjects are formal languages, automata, conventional and unconventional computation theory, and applications of automata theory.
