Echocardiography has certainly become the mostly used noninvasiveimaging technology in the assessment of cardiac fun ction.Several technical refinements over the years have made it asuperb diagnostic tool in different clinical settings, including theintensive (ICU, intensive care unit)/emergency (ER, emergencyroom) care atmosphere. The ability to perform transesophagealstudies, to use contrast or three dimensional echo and fully assessthe hemodynamics at bedside in a reliable way, or use a hand-helddevice, among others, has added significant value and accuracyto the way patients are currently managed in the ICU/ER. It isalso a reality that echocardiography has expanded beyond theboundaries of cardiology, which is unavoidable (and maybe evendesirable). It is, however, important to strongly underline the needof proper knowledge and training in order to make it a usefuland reliable method. This encompasses a whole set of differentapproaches, including practical training and adequate sources ofinformation and study. This book by Adrian Chenzbraun certainlyfulfils this goal in several ways. In opposition to the conventionalclassical books, sometimes with too many theoretical details thatmake the reader a bit lost, in this book there was great care inmaking it a useful bedside tool with very practical tips, profuseillustrations demonstrating the main uses, pitfalls, and tricks ofechocardiography in the emergency setting. With great wit theauthor provides very practical algorithms for the different clinicalsituations. Consequently, this is a book not only for the ones whoare starting to use the technique but also will certainly be a greathelp for the experienced echocardiologist or intensivist. Certainly,the extensive experience of the author in the field helped in craftingthis book and turning it into a real practical advisor.
