Polarization Optics in Telecommunications
Jay N. Damask
The telecommunications bubble of the late 1990's resulted in a wealth of new research, techniques and components design, although the industry-funded research remains scattered and has not been well documented in the technical literature. This book intends bring together recent advances in telecommunications to create a standard, practical reference for component designers and users of telecommunications-grade micro-optics components. Beginning with a history of polarization optics in telecomm applications, the author offers a formalism of the application of spin-vector calculus to polarization optics. Applications discussed include fiber collimators, optical isolators, optical circulators, optical interleavers, and extended discussion of Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) and its generating instruments and measurement. This bookВ fills a gap in the technical literature, as a reference to researchers and component designers in industry and academia.
