Given that chemicals in over 1,400 (mainly household) products can be intentionally inhaled for their psychoactive and mind-altering effects, it's not surprising that inhalants are the most commonly abused drug in the United States today, especially among young people. In spite of their popularity, however, very little is known about how these chemicals act on the brain and body. This book provides valuable information on the history of inhalant abuse, the major classes of the most commonly abused inhalants, what scientists currently know about the effects of inhalants on the brain and body, trends in inhalant abuse, and treatment and prevention measures.
