New Photonics Technologies for the Information Age

Representing both technical fields and fields in which the technology is used, contributors from companies and universities in Europe, the US, and Japan explore the potential for ubiquitous information technology promised by the integration of optical technology, wireless technology, and Internet technology. The 10 papers, selected from a May 2003 symposium in Atsugi, Japan, discuss the renaissance of physics and technology for ubiquitous information technology services; new photonics, electronics, and micromechanatronics applications for biology and ubiquitous medical sensing; and new communications schemes for ubiquitous information technology services. Among specific topics are photonic crystal fibers in communications and sensing, prospects for a global network, physics and applications of nanophotonics, and a near-field sensing transceiver for intrabody communications.
