Iyengar (computer science, Louisiana University) and Brooks (computer engineering, Clemson University) introduce the theory and applications of distributed sensor networks (DSNs). They include essential background on wireless networks, signal processing, and self-organizing systems, as well as computational theoretical background, then provide material on distributed sensing and signal processing, information fusion, sensor deployment and networking, adaptive tasking, self-configuration, and beamforming. Applications are presented from many fields. Recurring themes examined include multidimensional data structures, reasoning with uncertainty, system dependability, and the use of metaheuristics.
