Geographical information systems (GISs) have been essential tools in urban planning and delivery of government services, but they have also been important to the private business sector as well. Pick (business, U. of Redlands) and contributors examine the current research in the US, Europe, Canada and Mexico on the application of GISs to business. Topics in the first section, which covers the foundations of the study of GISs in business, include understanding the concepts and theories of GISs, choosing techniques and methods, and determining costs and benefits.
