The objective of statistical mechanics is to explain and predict the properties of macroscopic matter from the properties of its microscopic constituents. The subject is traditionally divided into an equilibrium and a nonequilibrium part. This volume of the Studies is the first of several planned volumes devoted to a thorough review of the current state of the art of nonequilibrium theory.
