More than thirty years ago J. F. Ritt founded the branch of mathematics now called differential algebra, bringing a new insight to the study of differential equations. Shortly thereafter he applied similar methods to difference equations. While difference algebra has lagged behind differential algebra in development, it now possesses a body of results comparable to the main stem of differential algebra, if without its ramifications. This book is the first systematic presentation of difference algebra.
