Poorly written books steal titles. That said, it should be a crime to title a book in such an undermining, name-slashing way. "The Feminine Mystique" was groundbreaking in the 60's and is still influential today. It talks about women who have given their lives to their husbands and children and suburban households before they really understood what life they wanted to lead, and who they were. Because of this they grew restless, depressed, and resentful. This is not to say all women are like this, that no one should marry at 17, it is a cast study and a timeless one, seeing as these problems existed for women, and in some ways men, for centuries before the book, and for decades after it. That book touched upon issues I saw blatantly plaguing many people in my year teaching abroad in Asia, in a poorer country where all women were housewives and all men grew up dependent and childish. There is a certain amount of generalizing that occurs with case studies such as these, but it was an enlightening book and to knock it with first a title and an entire book anti-femininsim, as if there is only one type of feminism is narrow, and hypocritical. The original "The Feminist Mystique" is worth a read, more than I can say for this book, because even as "Mystique" is a bit dated, it is still very relevant today. This book is a "mistake".
