There's a lot of very good information in this dictionary, which is one of the most complete sources of its type I've seen -- I believe that only the one compiled by Peter Day is better.

But this book is terribly overpriced. Really - $100 for this?

The comments in a couple of the other reviews on this page referring to objectivity, different Orthodox churches and jurisdictions, etc. are representative of what's fundamentally wrong with this volume. It was prepared by people who evidently have an axe to grind regarding church politics, and it's very unfair to those who seek objective descriptions of some Orthodox church groups who obviously didn't enjoy the approval of those preparing this volume.

In short, like the Blackwell Dictionary of Eastern Christianity, the authors have allowed their uninformed personal opinions to muddle the truth on some points. Especially in this era when churches of the Russian tradition are actually growing back together and reunifying, the message offered in some unfortunate passsages in this book is sadly outdated.

A revised edition, sans ecclesiastical mudslinging, would make this a superior resource.
